Stage & Entertainment
Stage entertainment is all about delivering superb performances, but it is what’s behind the scenes that makes all the difference, especially when it comes to safety and the technology covered by EN 17206.
Throughout the industry, riggers and installers are using our UK-made Guard load arrestors as load securing devices for safeguarding lighting and sound equipment that is suspended above people. Guard Load Arrest in Stage / Theatre is being increasingly utilised under EN 17206:2020 as a secondary safeguard for entertainment technology.
If your primary load bearing equipment fails, the Guard load arrestor will automatically stop the load from falling, thereby preventing damage to the equipment and, more importantly, protecting the audience/performers below.
The Guard’s cable automatically extends and retracts, following the movement of the load. This is ideal for loads that need to move, and often means the cable often does not need to be disconnected when changing lights or speakers.

Industrial
Load arrestors provide fall protection for equipment. There are a huge number of applications where load arrestors may be deployed, across a range of industries.
Do you lift or suspend equipment that cannot be allowed to drop? If so, you should consider installing a Guard load arrest device as a safeguard in case the primary lifting equipment fails.
If your primary load bearing equipment fails, a Guard load arrestor will automatically stop the load from falling, thereby preventing damage to the materials and, more importantly, protecting anybody below.
In many cases, fall protection for equipment is essential.

FAQs
Q. What is the arrest distance for a GUARD Load Arrestor?
A. The arrest distance or minimum clearance of all our GUARD Load Arrest products is specified as 1 m (3.3 ft). This is the minimum vertical distance required to arrest the load, and incorporates the freefall distance, deceleration distance and a safety factor.
Q. At what speed will a GUARD Load Arrestor activate?
A. The brake mechanism within our GUARD Load Arrest products is designed to engage as soon as the object they are supporting enters freefall. The speed at which the brake mechanism engages is also known as the activation speed. Multiple variables can influence the activation speed, and it differs for each type of GUARD Load Arrest. Please refer to the specification table on our website to determine the activation speed for each of our GUARD Load Arrest products.
The Activation Speed is also referred to as the maximum running speed. This is because it is the maximum speed the cable can be extracted from the GUARD Load Arrest without activating the brake. The maximum running speed is a critical consideration when utilising our GUARD Load Arrest products alongside fast running hoists or conveyors. If the normal running speed of the hoist or conveyor exceeds the maximum running speed of the GUARD Load Arrestor it will activate and lock brake mechanism.
Q. What is the Maximum Working Load of a GUARD Load Arrestor?
A. The maximum working load (MWL) is the maximum weight of the object that the GUARD Load Arrestor is designed to safely support under normal operating conditions. The maximum working load is clearly stated on each of our GUARD Load Arrest products and can also be found in the specification table on our website.
Q. Does the unit need to be used with a shackle as shown in the drawing sheet on your website for the top connection of the arrestor?
A. All our GUARD Load Arrest products are supplied with a bow (or anchor) shackle to connect it to an appropriate anchor point. It is possible to use a different type of shackle with our products providing they meet the minimum strength requirements. Please contact us if you are unsure of the minimum strength requirements. We also recommend that any shackles used with our products are secured with a bolt, nut, and cotter pin.
Q. What forces will the supported load experience if the primary hoist fails and the GUARD Load Arrestor activates and arrests the fall of the supported load?
A. All our GUARD Load Arrest products incorporate an energy dissipating brake mechanism to minimise the forces experienced by the load during an arrest. Due to the number of variables to consider, it is very difficult to calculate the exact force experienced by a load during its arrest, but worst-case scenarios are specified in the Minimum Anchor Strength requirements in the specification table on our website.
Q. Can a GUARD Load Arrestor be used alongside Pulley?
A. Yes. It is possible to use a lifting pulley in a system alongside a GUARD Load Arrestor. Pulleys are typically used to change the direction of the cable within the system, but they will also impact the performance of the system. It’s important to consider the factors below before using a pulley:
Cable Length – Introducing a pulley may reduce the useable cable length of the GUARD Load Arrestor.
Activation Speed – In certain scenarios a pulley will reduce the activation speed of the GUARD Load Arrestor.
Maximum Working Load (MWL) – The MWL of a GUARD Load Arrestor can be increased by incorporating a pulley into the system.
Minimum Anchor Strength – The minimum anchor strength required will increase to account for the extra forces within the system by incorporating a pulley.
Consult a competent person or qualified engineer prior to incorporating a pulley into any system alongside a GUARD Load Arrestor. Contact us if you require any additional information.
Q. WHAT ARE THE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS OF A GUARD LOAD ARRESTOR?
A. GUARD Load Arrestors must be serviced by a Globestock approved service agent at least every 12 months. GUARD Load Arrestors may require more frequent servicing when they are used in harsh environments. GUARD Load Arrestors must also undergo a service whenever they arrest a load, regardless of when they were last serviced. Contact Globestock directly if you are unsure of the service requirements for your GUARD Load Arrestor.
Q. DOES A GUARD LOAD ARRESTOR NEED SERVICING WHEN IT ARRESTS A LOAD?
A. Yes. Any GUARD Load Arrestor that has arrested a load must be removed from service immediately and sent to a Globestock approved service agent, regardless of when it was last serviced.
Q. CAN ANYONE SERVICE A GUARD LOAD ARRESTOR?
A. No, only Globestock approved service agents are qualified to service a GUARD Load Arrestor. Tampering with a GUARD Load Arrestor is extremely dangerous and will compromise the safety and performance of the GUARD Load Arrestor.
