
Understanding Suspension Trauma
Suspension trauma—also known as suspension intolerance or orthostatic intolerance—is a serious medical condition that can occur when a person is suspended motionless in a harness for an extended period following a fall. Blood can pool in the legs due to restricted circulation, potentially leading to fainting, organ failure, or even death if not promptly addressed.
Full Body Harnesses (FBH) are not designed for prolonged suspension. If extended suspension is anticipated, the use of an appropriate support is strongly recommended.
The effects of suspension trauma can be mitigated through:
- Proper harness design
- The timely use of suspension relief equipment
- A prompt and effective rescue plan
A conscious user may activate a suspension trauma relief device, such as Trauma Suspension Straps, to alleviate pressure on the legs and maintain adequate blood circulation, delaying the onset of suspension trauma until rescue can be completed.
